What is YAG Laser?

YAG Laser (Nd:YAG Laser) is a painless outpatient procedure used to treat after-cataract (posterior capsule opacification) or certain types of glaucoma. It uses a focused light beam to create a small opening in the cloudy capsule behind an artificial lens implant or to relieve pressure in the eye.

YAG Laser (Nd:YAG Laser) is a specialized eye treatment used mainly after cataract surgery to restore clear vision.
Sometimes, months or years after cataract surgery, the capsule holding the artificial lens becomes cloudy, causing blurred or hazy vision similar to having cataracts again. This condition is called posterior capsule opacification or after-cataract. The YAG Laser creates a small, precise opening in this cloudy capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly to the retina, thereby improving vision instantly. It is also used in certain types of glaucoma treatment to create an opening to reduce eye pressure. The procedure is quick, painless, and done as an outpatient treatment without any surgical incision.

Symptoms Indicating Need for YAG Laser

  • Blurred or hazy vision after cataract surgery
  • Glare or halos around lights
  • Reduced clarity despite a clear artificial lens
  • Increased eye pressure (in some glaucoma types)
  • Difficulty reading or performing daily tasks due to cloudy vision

Procedure

  • The eye is numbed with drops
  • You will sit at a laser machine, similar to an eye exam slit lamp
  • The doctor uses the YAG Laser to create a clear opening in the capsule behind your lens implant or to treat specific glaucoma conditions
  • The procedure takes only a few minutes and is painless
  • Vision improves within a few hours to a few days

Prevention

Posterior capsule opacification (after-cataract) cannot be completely prevented, as it is a natural reaction in some patients after cataract surgery. However:
  • Regular follow-up with your eye doctor helps detect it early
  • Maintaining eye health and controlling other eye conditions (like diabetes-related eye problems) is beneficial
